5 Things You Should Know About College Kids

1. They are always tired.
No, like really. It's a given , a constant state of being. To what extent varies, but it's always there in some form. In the background. So that when one of them sees a long bench at a booth or something the first thought is not, "that bench is strangely long," it's, "that bench is long enough to sleep on". Always. Tired.

2. They are utterly broke. (cliche, but who cares).
To the point that they usually know (or can figure out in a few seconds) the cheapest way to eat at any given restaurant. Because not only are they broke, they also have no time to eat actual meals where you sit down at an actual table and take the time to enjoy food and company. And if they have a gift card, they will eat at that place, regardless of how much they do or do not like it.

3. They could live out of their cars.
Seriously. If you get in the car of a college student, there will be a plethora of cups and bags from fast food places, a coat, a pair of shoes, a textbook, probably some old homework assignments, CD's all over the place, and any number of other things. They could probably pick out an entire outfit just from the clothes that get tossed in the car. Missing assignments? In the car. Phone? In the car. And while we're on the topic, they're good at multitasking in the car. They can eat, talk on the phone, put on make up all while driving.

4. They are firm supporters of the statement "Ignorance is bliss."
Most of them, at least. Those few days after a test and before grades are posted are some of the most blissful days in a college students life. The test is over, for better or for worse, and grades aren't there to be known yet, so why not spend a few days not stressed?

5.One word: Caffeine.
It doesn't matter what form it comes in. Coffee, Mountain Dew, tea, whatever it is. If it has caffeine in it, there's probably college students not far away. People like to think that college students hang out in coffee shops because they're quiet, or because that's where "cool people" go, or something like that. This is false. They are called COFFEE shops. What is contained in coffee? That's right. Caffeine.

There you have it. Five things you should know about college kids. If you are a college kid, read this and laugh. If not, read this and have sympathy for us.

Just a Regular Morning

Noise. Ringing. Bells. So loud. Be quiet.

MAKE IT STOP!!!

Light.

Turn on the light.

Ouch. That hurts.

Get up.

But it's warm.

Get up lazy butt.

Cold. So cold.

Warm shower.

Cold and wet. Mornings are evil.

Clothes. Look like a person.

I don't want to be a person.

Too bad.

"Good morning, dear."

CAFFEINE

"Need to make coffee."

Hurry up.

"You look cute."

"Thanks."

"What classes do you have today?"

Zip backpack. Computer cord? Check.

"Math...lit...and chemistry"

"Okay. What time will you be home again?"

"3:30ish. I have to go. Now."

"Oh. Okay, bye! Have a good day!"

Stop hugging. Have to leave.

"Bye. Love you too."

Score. I left on time.

No. Blow warm air, you stupid car.

Drive faster. Slow pokes. Move. I'm gonna be late.

Score again. Got here on time.

So. Cold.

Almost there. Almost inside.

Aahh. Warm air.

Early. Time to read.

Ew. Don't sit next to me again. You smell like pot. Or cigarettes. Or something.

Good. Alden's here.

"So how was your weekend?"

"Uh..."

Think! What did you do?

"It was good. Did homework. Worked. Went to church. Ate lunch with some friends. How was yours?"

"Pretty good. Didn't do much."

"Okay guys, let's get started."

Numbers are dumb.

***

End part one of the totally random and uncalled for internal monologue of a college student. (Namely, myself. Mostly because I didn't have anything else to go off of.)
Part Two to follow some day. Hope you all enjoyed. :)

Love,
Robin

Hey There!

Well, after a long absence, I'm back. I feel like I haven't written in forever and I was like, "I need to write a blog post." So here we go.

I feel like I should have something to tell about what I've been doing, but I haven't been doing much. Just working. So it's weird. Also my "s" key is sticking. Whatever. Anways. I've been working. And then, this past week, Monday through Thursday, a dear friend of mine came to visit (well actually I sorta kidnapped her, but that's beside the point) and we had a great time. We stayed up late every night, and made many midnight runs to the pantry. We watched Emma, which I'd never seen before (it was amazing) and she introduced me to the Lizzie Bennet Diaries. They were brilliant. Like they had me cracking up and sobbing on Annakate's arm. Go watch them. They are beautiful. On Wednesday night, we had coffee with a bunch of friends and got to surprise everybody, which was completely awesome! I think that the conversations you have with your friends at 1:30 are the best; and we had so many of them. It was wonderful; even if she stole my phone and hacked my facebook and told everybody that I was a Peeta fan and preferred Percy to Jason.

In other news, today was the first day of college classes. Needless to say, because I'm me, I was freaked out about it. However, it wasn't to bad. Granted it's pretty hard to get worse than my first day of LAST semester, but still. :) I was well on my way to school when I realized I'd forgotten my schedule, so I had no idea where my classes were. Then, I was already close to being late when I missed the turn into the parking deck at school and had to search for it. When I got there I had to find the building (my mom texted me what was on my schedule :)) and was late to my first class. But then I went to my next class (English) and I LOVE my professor. She's going to be awesome! But then, for some reason I had an alarm set on my phone for 9 am, and (despite the fact that I had the sound turned off) it went off in the middle of class. And my professor just started laughing. Over all though,  it was a good day. :)

But now I feel the need to watch a Harry Potter coming on. So I'm going to leave you lovely people for now and watch Harry Potter.

Until I get my Hogwarts letter,
Robin

Crayons Can Melt On Us For All I Care

That is how I feel at this point. Crayons can melt on us for all I care. Everything is crazy right now with graduation and finals. Again. crayons can melt on us. Unless they're poison crayons. Then that would be bad.  Extremely so. I mean, who wants to be covered in poison crayons? Anyways. Whatever.

I want to have a Disney movie marathon. My sister is watching Cinderella right now, and earlier she watched The Emperor's New Groove. And now I want a marathon. Any one interested?

(a picture for your benefit)

This is quite possibly the most random post I've ever written. Mainly because I'm avoiding my anatomy homework. But I really should get off the internet and work. But I really don't want to. Oh well. Maybe I'll get my Hogwarts letter, or the TARDIS will show up in my yard, or I'll walk into my closet and find myself in Narnia. That would be nice. Or maybe my cup will magically refill with coffee. Sorry, I'm rambling.

This made me laugh. Hopefully you can see it.
If not, take my word for it. It's funny.

Also, before I go, the title for this post is the title of a song by Relient K. Here are the lyrics.

(Trust me. Watch the video.) Enjoy! =)

Until a later time when I don't have homework hanging over my head,
Robin

More Poetry

This is what happens when I go to math class in the evening with a lack of sleep.

Math Class

Numbers and letters swirl,
Across the board they spread.
Teacher speaks words I cannot comprehend.
My head dips, my paper moves.

I can't think,
A great fog covers my head.
And my mortal form demands sustenance.
My mouth opens wide in a yawn.

A spaceship, a sword and a coffee
Pop in amidst the numbers.
Click my phone, find the time,
Another 45 minutes to go.

I wish I had my calculator,
I love my teacher's markers.
Only four minutes have gone by,
Which rhymes with five.

Peas and pods and variables
None have anything to do with me.
I have the TARDIS on my phone!
It's 5:08, time is running slow.

Late to bed, early to rise,
Definitely does not not make a man wise.
Papers, words and grammar all in one night.
Sleep? It's overrated.

So. More poetry. I was thinking I might dedicate one day to poetry and write a poem once a week. Because, surprisingly, I'm finding myself enjoying this. Good idea? Bad idea? Let me know what you think!

Until I've had sleep,
Robin

It's a Monday

Today at school I got bored. And so I did the same thing I always do when I get bored: Pick up a pen. Only today, I did something a little different. I wrote a poem. Or tried to. You see, I'm not all that good at poetry, and I don't know that this even counts as poetry, since it doesn't follow much of a pattern, and doesn't really rhyme. But it came straight from my head of it's own accord, and was inspired in half from a character in a book. (If you name the book and character, I will send you chocolate through my computer screen) Anyways, here it is!

Screams

He weeps,
He holds death
In his hands.
They haunt him.
Screams, screams.

The voices of many,
Voices of the Lost Ones
The lonely assassin.
They haunt him.
Screams, screams.

He closes his eyes.
Still he sees them;
He cannot hide.
They haunt him.
Screams, screams.

He sees their faces,
Blood drips down,
It proclaims his guilt.
They haunt him.
Screams, screams.

Sharp blade of steel,
Instrument  of death.
He holds in his hand.
They haunt him.
Screams, screams.

He wonders, "Why?"
Bloody footprints
Trail behind.
They haunt him.
Screams, screams.

They hurt him.
His soul twisted
In agony cries.
They haunt him.
Screams, screams.

And there you have it. I promise I'm not like suicidal or anything. It's just easier to write sad stuff than happy stuff. But I am not depresses; I swear! That's all for now, so have a lovely Monday, everyone! Except it's a Monday, which makes that statement a complete contradiction, but whatever. =)
Until I can think again,
Robin

And So It Starts (Again)

School started this week. No more sleeping till eleven and wandering around the house watching movies and reading books for me. Be that as it may, I was kind of looking forward to the start of school. I like school (most of the time) because its interesting (usually) and with the exception of math. So. Monday. That day dreaded by all the inhabitants of this planet Earth. That day that drags us all out of bed after the delightful sleep and relaxation of the weekend. I had an absolutely undeniably horrid interesting Monday.
First I woke up 15 minutes before I had to leave, but I somehow managed to get out the door almost on time. But I am geographically challenged. I'm going to a different college campus this semester, and I got lost on the way there. In the end, my friend's mom actually drove to the parking lot where I stopped and had me follow her to the school. So I was 20 minutes late for my first class. 'Well at least it can't get any worse'  Never say that. Stuff always gets worse when you say that! I read my schedule wrong after my first class, and went to what I thought was my second one, and realized 10 minutes into it that it was the wrong class and arrived 10 minutes late to the right one. So I had to walk in front of the whole class collecting all these papers from the teacher. And one the way home I almost, almost got lost again. So by the time I was on the way home I was ready to be home lay on the couch and say "No one talk to me" But when I walked up the stairs I just started laughing. It is kind of funny in hindsight.

So that was my Monday? How was yours?

Oh, also, this is a random thought that's been floating around in my head for awhile. For those of you who have read or watched (or both) The Lord of the Rings, what do you think would have happened if Denethor had met Aragorn?

Happy New Year

2012 is gone, 2013 has come. When I was younger, I heard I car commercial mentioning something like "No down payments till 2013!!" And I remember thinking to myself, "Well then it's basically free, because we'll all be dead by then!" I find that very humorous at the moment. Time flies.

This past year was crazy (but good) one. Everything seemed to change for me. I got my liscence, I started my senior year, I started taking college classes, my sister got engaged. The Hobbit came out. So many good things happened, but at the same time I felt like I was living in a whirlwind. A whirlwind where I struggled spiritually and struggled to grasp the fact that so many things were changing and ending for me.

Despite that, it's been a wonderful year, and I'm so thankful for the friends and family who made it that way. Now to find out what 2013 has in store for me!

Apples and Fall Weather

I'm sitting here, staring at the blank screen in front of me trying to think of something to write, but my ornery mind keeps wandering to how good this apple tastes. Which in turn makes me think of how the weather's cooling. AHA! Something to post about. Fall. And the beauties there of.
I love Fall. It's probably my favorite season of the year. It's so pretty. The trees come alive with color. Now, don't get me wrong, I love all the innumerable shades of green in summer. But there's something about those fall leaves that just radiates loveliness.

I am not a photographer. Pictures from Google.

See what I mean? Beautiful. I also love how the wind picks up in fall. It's a gentle wind that blows a whisper of cold weather to come, but it doesn't block out the warmth from the sun. I love the way the wind lovingly caresses me, and makes me feel simply alive. I love the wind. And fall comes with the wind. Fall is comfortable. It gives you a slight chill that requires a comfy sweater, but still warm enough to make being outside enjoyable. I'm so glad it's fall! Now, if only I could have fall without school. That would make it perfect!

My Psych Teacher is Psycho

Excuse me. My psychology Professor is a little bit strange. Nah scratch that, I don't feel like being polite. My   psych teacher really is crazy.
No really.

She is.

She would be even if she weren't teaching psychology. Which is a load of rubbish anyways. At least in my opinion. For one thing, she's been teaching for like thirty years and she still doesn't know how the computers work. And when she tries to get the internet up she's always like, "Now pray to whatever your god is that this works". Or something like that. Its super annoying. And when she lectures, she starts out on one train of thought, and then goes of on another, and by the time she gets back around to the first, she's forgotten what it was about in the first place.

Ridiculous.

And the other day she said at some point in the lecture, "more fuller". That like, hurt my very SOUL. My college professor used improper English. It's a disgrace to this beautiful language we speak!  And the interesting thing is, when I talked to a friend, she said she vaguely remembers her sister saying the same thing about her psych teacher. So. I came up with a theory. Are you ready for this? Good. Cause here we go.

They are all the same.

Which should raise a suspicion in your minds.

They're aliens! They've disguised themselves as humans and gotten jobs as teachers!

They've come to earth to brainwash our young to their beliefs so they can take over the world.

That is a dirty low trick.
Targeting the children.

They are heartless, these aliens!

Ok, so maybe that's a little extreme. But you never know. It could be true. We wouldn't know until they attacked us in order to fully take over. Which is why its a perfect plan. But they do not know that we have....um....Lucky Charms! Oh, yes! We have Lucky Charms! We shall be invincible! ...Until the sugar rush wears off. But who knows? Maybe Lucky Charms are deadly to the aliens. Do you have any ideas?

Until I defeat the aliens,
Robin

I Have No Idea What To Title This Post...Any Ideas?

No, seriously. I can't think of a title that fits all the things that will be in this post. So if you have an idea leave it in a comment. Remember, comments (and followers) make my day! Who knows, maybe I'll go back and use one of your titles, (if you don't mind, that is =) in this post.
So, yesterday was a crazy day for me. At 8:00 A.M I went to the driving place and took my driver's test for the second time. (I failed the first one.) I passed, and I feel like my entire body let out a gigantic sigh of relief when the guy (it was an old dude who talked really low) said I passed. then I couldn't stop grinning. And thinking about how weird it was (is) that I am a licensed driver. Then after some school, and a really tedious anatomy study guide, I drove to College Bible Study. Now, see if you can spot two weird words in that sentence. DING DING DING!!! *Game show host voice* That's right! You got it! Drove and college! Not only did I drive myself somewhere, I drove myself to College Bible Study! I feel so....old! I know I've said that alot in these last few posts, but hopefully this'll be the last time. I'm still trying to process all this stuff. Oh, speaking of feeling old, I also have a college ID for my college classes which start on Monday. YIKES!
Today, not much happened, except for me almost getting my mother and I lost, and eating cookie dough with my friend. Then I drove myself to gymnastics practice. Drove myself. Still weired out over here. On the way home though, I saw something somewhat amusing. At least I thought it was. You may not share my weird sense of humor. Who knows. Well, I guess you do. But that's beside the point. On the way home I passed a bright yellow sports car with it's convertible top down. Being driven by a little old man. It made me laugh. Some old dude driving his bright yellow fancy convertible car.
So what has been happening in your life lately? What's made you laugh recently? I'd love to know! =)

The Begining...of a Whirlwind

Today was the first day of school. The first day of Senior year. #can'tbelievethisishappening
Anyways, I finished like half of my advanced comp. homework already, so I feel entitled to write a blog post. Especially since I haven't done so in a week. I'm sorry. I was on vacation and didn't have time. Hopefully my posting will become more consistent now that school's started.

This year is going to be crazy for me. Not all at once, but several things are changing for me this year and the beginning of next. Starting today. I am officially a Senior. Whaaaaaaaaaat??? Tomorrow, I'm going to be taking my driving test. So I can have a license. I'll be *gasp* a LICENSED DRIVER!es along with my Yikes! Then (this isn't so huge, it just goes along with my topic of changing things) I'll go (as in drive myself) to my church's college Bible Study. How weird is that? I'm old enough to go to college group! On Monday, I will be starting college classes. Even weirder. It won't be like...all church people! *Runs and hides in corner* Then that's it for awhile. Then. I'm not sure if I've already mentioned this or not, so sorry if I have. But my sister is *drum roll* getting married!!!!!!!! She's getting married in March! She got engaged in February. Her fiance is really great. When he proposed, he took a picture of the ring and had it hung in an art gallery in downtown Chicago, where he lives. They went to go look at the art galleries one day, and when they got to that picture he pointed that one out. She looked at it, and as she read the caption, which said, "Christina, will you marry me?" he got down on his knee with the ring and asked her to marry him! And she said "Yes", of course! I'm so excited.

The day after the wedding is my birthday. I'll be eighteen...old. I'll be a legal adult. I'll be able to vote in the next election. For all technical purposes, I'll be a...a...GROWN-UP. *horror movie screams* But not really. I know I won't act like it. Being young and goofy is much more fun! :) THEN In May. I will graduate. What is this??? I can't believe I will be out of highschool in less than a full year! I'm trying not to think about it to much! Anyways, that's all I have to say for the moment. So, what's up in your lives? Anything new or interesting or old and dull, or crazy and mind blowing? Share your thoughts! And please, please, please follow me! Followers (and comments) make my day!

Until the Doctor comes to take me on an adventure,

Rambling Random Thoughts

I was going to make that title sound all cute with three R's.....but I couldn't think of another "R" word, so I didn't. I just put thoughts instead. I could have put something like rings or rocks or roads or rabbits or rats but none of those would make sense. Rabbits are cute though. I'm watching men's gymnastics right now. Those guys haveinsanely HUGE muscles. Like seriously huge. I have a talent for pointing out the obvious. It's 11:30 at night, and i have no idea what to write about. My thoughts are dripping through my brain like quicksand. I've tried to think thoughts and write and be creative all day but it's not working. Every time I try it's like my brain just goes, "Meh." and that's as far as I can get.

I have open house for school tomorrow. That means the day I start school is like a week away. In one week people, I'll be a ...DUN DUN DUN... SENIOR! *gasps and horrified screams* Where in the world did my life go? I feel so...so...OLD! What is this? I'm almost done with high school? Huh? At least I'm only taking five classes. But three of them are at...DUN DUN DUN....COLLAGE! *Gasps and horrified screams again* There will be people there. Normal people. I'll have to be *Gasp* NORMAL! Not only normal, but SOCIAL! WHAAAAAAAAAT???

Speaking of, this made me laugh....

Also, in other news/thoughts/rocks/roads/rabbits, I'm reading A Tale of Two Cities. Again. Voluntarily. That's the crazy part. I am willingly reading this book. After all my complaining about it this year. After having it assigned in school twice in two separate years, and neither time finishing it. I was told by two people that have similar taste in books to me, that it is a good book. Also, that being made to read it in a week is wrong. Also when I read it on Sparknotes, (yes, I used Sparknotes for school last year, though I am ashamed to admit it :) I enjoyed the story. It was very interesting with many plot twists and crazy stuff. So I am reading it again, taking more than a week, and this time I WILL finish it.

Oh wow. It's almost 12. I've been rambling for a half an hour now. So thank-you, dear readers, for listening to my Rambling Random Rabbit Road. HA! All R's!

Until another day when I am not having my mind blown,
Robin

This. Is. The. End. (of Chemistry)

Today was the last day of Timothy Ministry. Today was the last day of Lit. TODAY WAS THE LAST DAY OF CHEMISTRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *Jumps up and down squealing hysterically* I took the chemistry final today, and now I'm done. Finished. It's over. Finn es. I never have to think about it again. It's OVER people! Like, FOREVER! Ah-ha-HA-ha-ha!! (That was my Marry Poppins imitation in case you were wondering) Also at the behest of some of my followers, I am posting that LOTR essay I wrote. It's kinda long, so be warned, but here it is:

The Fellowship of the Ring as an Epic Fairytale

The Fellowship of the Ring is at once an epic tale along the lines of Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and a fairy tale about a simple hero thrust into the turbulent currents of the world. The hero, Frodo Baggins of Bag End, a hobbit of The Shire, is anything but the hero of an epic quest. Beowulf was said to possess legendary strength, and Gawain, despite being the youngest in the court, has a reputation as an accomplished knight. Frodo, on the other hand, possess none of these qualities, at least it seems so. He considers himself a simple hobbit of The Shire, he enjoys the company of friends, food and drink, sleeping late, tramping through all the familiar paths of Hobbiton. As his Uncle Bilbo puts it, “He [Frodo] would come with me, of course, if I asked him. In fact he offered to once, just before the party. But he does not really want to, yet. I want to see the wild country again before I die, and the Mountains; but he is still in love with the Shire, with woods and fields and little rivers.” (Fellowship of the Ring, pg. 32)
Not even Frodo can avoid hearing the call to adventure forever, however. It comes to him, just as it came to Bilbo, through the old wizard Gandalf. This estimable character arrives at Bag End one day with disturbing news about Frodo’s gold ring. After a long conversation, Gandalf gets to his most shocking bit of information: “This is the Master-ring, the One Ring to rule them all. This is the One Ring that he lost many ages ago, to the great lessening of his power. He greatly desires it – but he must not get it” (The Fellowship of the Ring, pg. 49). This is Frodo’s call to adventure. He accepted it, reluctantly, and in doing so began in a small way to show real heroic qualities sleeping under the surface. As Nathalie Giraurd says, “It is also important to note that the hero always accepts what Joseph Cambell calls ‘The Call to Adventure’”(Nathalie Giraurd, J.R.R Tolkein’s The Hobbit: An Unlikely Hero Driven to Heroism).  Later, Frodo hears the Call to Adventure repeated by more voices at the Council of Elrond. He demonstrates even more clearly heroic qualities lying beneath the surface by voluntarily accepting the Quest of the Ring.
An epic hero as from the old tales undertakes his quest alone. Bilbo, near the end of his own story accomplishes this. He and the dwarves have arrived at the Mountain, but they do not know what to do, and it is Bilbo who provides a solution. “Now I will make you an offer,” he says, “I have got my ring and will creep down this very noon…and see what he [Smaug] is up to,” (the Hobbit, pg.221).  Frodo, from beginning to end has at least one companion; though the breaking of the Fellowship is similar to continuing on alone. For the majority of the journey, however, he has eight companions, one of whom is rather important, and demonstrates another aspect of the mix between epic and fairy tale in this book: Aragorn son of Arathorn. His life has been spent in solitary wanderings, as he tells Boromir at the Council. “I have had a hard life and a long; and the leagues that lie between here and Gondor are a small part in the count of my journeys. I have crossed many mountains and many rivers and trodden many plains, even into the far countries Rhun and Harad where the stars are strange…Lonely men are we, Rangers of the wild, hunters-but hunters ever of the servants of the Enemy,” (Fellowship of the Ring, pg. 242).
He is also the possessor of a legendary sword: Narsil, blade of Elendil that broke beneath him when he died in the Battle of the Last Alliance. Aragorn renamed it Anduril. Frodo also carries a sword of legend inherited from Bilbo. The blade Sting that Bilbo acquired on his journey made long ago by Elven smiths. A few of the other characters are bearers of legendary weapons as well. Gandalf, who bears along with his staff, the Elven sword Glamdring, once born by the king of the great city Gondolin in the Elder Days. Even Pippin and Merry, the youngest of the Company have swords that while unnamed, have legendary beginnings, made by the men of Westernesse; Numenorians.
According to Giraurd another “characteristic of the epic hero is his noble origin,” (Nathalie Giraurd, J.R.R Tolkein’s The Hobbit: An Unlikely Hero Driven to Heroism). Frodo, however more resembles the hero of a fairytale: An average man who becomes great. Aragorn however is of noble lineage, as he proclaims to Eomer, on the fields of Rohan, “ ‘Elendil’ he cried, ‘I am Aragorn son of Arathorn, and am called Elessar, the Elfstone, Dunadan, the heir of Isildur Elendil’s son of Gondor. Here is the Sword that was Broken and is forged again! Will you aid me or thwart me? Choose swiftly!’” (The Two Towers, pg. 423). Legolas and Bormir are of noble birth as well, though neither of them are the hero of the story. Boromir is the son and heir of the steward of Gondor, and Legolas is the son of Thranduil, Elven king of Mirkwood.
Loyalty is a virtue esteemed by people of all kinds.  There should be no surprise then, in the fact that loyalty is one of the qualities in an epic hero. Sir Gawain even lays his own life in danger in order to save King Arthur. While this trait can be seen in the Fellowship of the Ring, it is not in the hero that it is most profoundly demonstrated. Instead, Sam Gamgee, Frodo’s servant shows true loyalty with poignant clarity. He recounts to Frodo a conversation and says, “ ‘Leave him!’ I said, ‘I never mean to. I am going with him, if he climbs to the Moon, and if any of those Black Riders try to stop him, they’ll have Sam Gamgee to reckon with,” (The Fellowship of the Ring, pg. 85). Pippin and Merry appear at first to simply be young, fun loving hobbits, but they prove themselves to be much, much more. They voluntarily choose to leave the Shire with Frodo, even though it would appear to be safer to stay home. Later on, after seeing the dangers of the harsh world outside the Shire, they still affirm the fact that they are willing to journey with Frodo all the way to Mount Doom. Aragorn too, is loyal to Frodo. He demonstrates his loyalty before he really even knows them, indeed it is in defending himself against Sam’s doubts that he does so: “But I am the real a Strider fortunately… I am Aragorn son of Arathorn, and if by life or death I can save you, I will,” (Fellowship of the Ring, pg. 168).  Like every other virtue, loyalty has an opposite: Disloyalty. If Aragorn and the hobbits display loyalty, Boromir shows disloyalty. This may seem an odd choice on Tolkien’s part, but the vice puts the virtue in clear relief. By demonstrating disloyalty and the ensuing chaos, the value of loyalty and the peace it provides becomes all the more clear.
Previously mentioned, an epic hero takes on his quest alone, while a fairy tale hero does not necessarily go alone. In this area, Tolkien blends the two. While characters often take on their quests together, each character must undertake his or her own journey. Eowyn, niece of Théoden king of the Riddermark, is just one example of this. Eowyn sees what her uncle cannot: war is encroaching all around their land. She sees that her father’s counselor, Grima, is a traitor, trying to destroy Rohan through its own king. She feels impotent; longing to do something but unable. She is not afraid of danger, and when Aragorn asks her what she does fear, she answers, “A cage… To stay behind bars, until use and old age accept them, and all chance of doing great deeds is gone beyond recall or desire,” (Return of the King, pg. 767).  Afterwards, when her uncle’s host has come, and prepares to depart, she disguises herself, and rides with the company. In one sense, she is part of a company, in another she rides alone.  At the end of her journey, she acts in true heroic fashion, and slays a great monster, the Witch King, chief of the Nazgul. She has (unbeknownst to her) the assistance of Merry in this feat, but she is the one who executes the killing blow; receiving a mortal wound in the process. When she recovers, returning from the doors of death, she finds she has learned wisdom.
Great physical strength, coupled with courage and bravery are much admired traits of epic heroes. Frodo is no possessor of great strength, though many of his companions are. Legolas, an elf, Gimli, a stout dwarf, wields his axe with great strokes, Aragorn and Boromir, both men of courage and valor, and Gandalf, who possesses strength that belies the appearance of age. Frodo has not the strength of these, but as Elrond said, “This quest may attempted by the weak with as much hope as the strong,” (The Fellowship of the Ring, pg. 262).  As for courage, it is not lacking in Frodo, only it sleeps; waiting for the right moment to show itself. And when it is revealed it is as great as that in the hearts of the strong. When he and the other hobbits, led by Aragorn camp on Weathertop, Frodo’s courage wakes for the first time. The Witch King attacked Frodo, and even though Frodo succumbed and put the Ring on, he still acted bravely; shouting and slashing at the Nazgul. Later, in Moria, Frodo’s courage is demonstrated again: “Suddenly, and to his own surprise, Frodo felt a hot wrath blaze up in his heart. ‘The Shire’ he cried, and springing beside Boromir, he stooped and stabbed with Sting at the hideous foot,” (The Fellowship of the Ring, pg. 316).  There is also courage to be found in endurance. A lesser heart would not endure forever, and Frodo endured and fought to the end. Even as they neared Mordor, and the Ring grew stronger, taking over more of Frodo’s mind, he, with a great effort of will, forced himself to keep going.
Frodo also learned wisdom, even before his quest was finished. Before he left, he possessed some small wisdom after a Shire-like fashion. He knew that there was a world outside the Shire, and that no matter how isolated it seemed, the Shire would be affected by the events that took place there. But as his journey progressed, he learned more wisdom. Perhaps this is shown most poignantly in his views about Gollum. At the beginning he tells Gandalf, “But I am frightened, and I do not feel any pity for Gollum…Do you mean to say that you, and the Elves, have let him live on after all those horrible deeds? Now, at any rate he is as bad as an Orc, and just an enemy. He deserves death,” (Fellowship of the Ring, pg. 58). Later on, he actually meets Gollum.  In a new answer to that previous conversation he says, “Very well…But I am still afraid. And yet, as you see, I will not touch the creature. For now that I see him, I do pity him,” (Two Towers, pg. 601).
In every part of the book, aspects of both an epic and a fairy tale can be seen. There are many more numerous demonstrations of this throughout the book. This mixture creates something unique; a something that appeals to both the part of us that wants an epic, something superhuman and awe-inspiring, and also to the part that wants a fairy tale, something that we can relate to, a hero we can feel for, empathize with. The Fellowship of the Ring pulls off this feat magnificently.

An there you have it, folks. The. End. Of. Timothy. Perhaps a social life will come to me now?

An Essay on LOTR, And A Semnlance of Logic? Maybe?

This week for school, I was given the best assignment I've ever had in my entire life. I mean, it was a amazing. Like the best thing that could've happened. I've been longing to do an assignment of this sort since I read LOTR. An essay. On The Lord of the Rings. HOW MUCH BETTER CAN IT GET?!? Needless to say, I'm a little excited about this. I think my teacher might hate me after reading it though, because I'm not exactly known for being brief when it's something I enjoy. :) And technically it's about Fellowship, but she said we could use other books by Tolkien as well, so I am probably going to have to limit my self. :/ But HEY! It's still a Lord of the Rings essay!!
Also, I just finished a delightful dinner from McDonald's. A cheeseburger, a coke, and french fries. French fries are the stuff of the gods. I would have taken a picture of them to share their loveliness with you delightful people, but alas! I ate them all. So I will simply have to taunt you about their lovely golden deliciousness. Warm, perfectly salted crunchy and squishy, aaah...they were wonderful! But they are sadly gone. So is the coke.
Anyways, I'll stop talking about food now. I'm sure you're all wondering about the whole "semblance of logic" thing, because as most of you probably know, logic isn't exactly something I excel at. So here goes: Today I was thinking about to things that I say all the time. First that normal is a relative term. Second that weird people have more fun. Well, I realized, if normal is relative, then so is weird. And if weird is relative than every person is thought weird by somebody else. Therefore everyone is weird. AND if weird people have more fun, and everyone is weird, then everyone has the same amount of fun, because everyone is weird, so everyone has more fun. I don't know if any of that made any sense, but I had to try. :)

P.S I love followers. Like really. Just so you know.

Economics, Cheese-Its, and Things Like Chemistry

Well, Timothy started yesterday. Therefore, Literature, Spanish, and......(cue dramatic drum roll) chemistry. But enough of that. Timothy starting also means seeing several amazing people, some of whom I only see on Timothy days! It also means getting to steal borrow permanently people's cheese-its! Economics does fit in this post somewhere...I promise! Because when Timothy started, all my other school started full force. Thus the economics.
Another interesting thing happened on Tuesday. I was forced to admit (to myself) that I think that chemistry is interesting, and that I think that the way algebra works is kinda cool. Did I, just say that?? What is happening to my brain?? That being the strangest part of the day, the best part was stealing borrowing permanently the cheese-its!
